Use of Freshguard

Table grapes are a non climacteric fruit with a low rate of physiological activity but are subject to serious water loss and decay during post harvest handling. Gray mold caused by fungus Botrytis cinerea and rachis browning, as a result of desiccation are the two main factors that reduce the table grapes post harvest quality.

Freshguard sulphur dioxide pads (SO2 pads) are used in the packaging process to control the development of botrytis. Careful handling of grapes at harvest and quickly cooling the grapes, pre cooling to around 0°C (32° F) and the use of sulphur dioxide overcomes problems associated with the decay and storage of table grapes.

• INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
• The first important step is to quickly pre cool the grapes following harvest.
• Ensure proper handling of the grapes and harvesting at low temperatures.
• Lower temperature prevents the rachis browning due to desiccation or loss of moisture as well as prevents the berries from drying.
• Use a liner in the carton to prevent and minimise the moisture loss.
• Place the freshguard sulphur dioxide generator sheet on top of the pouches/ punnets, keeping the glossy printed side upwards.
• Use the proper sheet size recommended for the carton and the quantity of grapes to be packed in each carton.
• Freshguard sulphur dioxide generator pads can be placed directly onto the table grapes. If desired an absorbent sheet/ paper can be used.
• Neatly close the liner over the SO2 pad and seal the carton properly to ensure a uniform release of SO2 in the carton for a long period.
• Immediately place the cartons for pre cooling to prevent moisture loss and decay.
• Recommended storage temperature is 0° C (32° F) and relative humidity 95%.
